21 Jun Helen Baldwin at DARC Annual Conference 2018: ‘Social work and problem substance use: Going in the right direction?’
Hestia researcher Helen Baldwin will present at the DARC Annual Conference 2018: ‘Social work and problem substance use: Going in the right direction?’, Middlesex University, London, 26 June 2018. During her talk she will elaborate on how English child protection agencies respond to parental substance abuse cases:
The link between parental substance misuse and child protection concerns is well-established, however research on responses by child protection services to parental substance misuse is still in its infancy. This research, which formed part of the wider Hestia study, provides a picture of responses to parental substance misuse by four child protection services in England. The findings indicate that there may be an under-assessment of parental substance misuse by child protection services and a lack of provision of specialist support for parents experiencing drug and/or alcohol problems. In the final stages of this research, social workers and specialist substance misuse workers will be interviewed about their responses to parental substance misuse and the factors that help or hinder them in responding to parental substance misuse in their day-to-day practice.
